Key to Notations:KC = Ken Carpenter CWR = Clan War Rule book A notation of [KC, 18-Sep-98] following an entry indicates that Ken Carpenter stated the ruling on that date. |
General
This section is for general questions that do not have a category (yet).
On a 3x5 base, what is considered the front? The 3 inch side is always considered the front. Even on Radakast, although the sculpture suggests otherwise. [KC, 15-Dec-99]
If a unit is performing a Break-Away, my unit gets a +1/+1 while taking Parting Shots, but if they are performing a Full Retreat, there is no such bonus, is that correct? Yes. Since a Full Retreat has enough penalties inherent in it, it seemed overkill to have them suffer the +1/+1 bonus to Parting Shots as well. Remember, if the unit performing a Full Retreat fails its morale check, it will Rout, and then the Parting Shots do double damage. [KC, 20-Jan-00]
- If an engaged unit is hit by Magic Mud Goblins, should the damage be split between the two units? Magic Mud Goblins are not missile attacks, so whatever unit they hit is the unit they damage, just as with all Close Combat attacks. If the MMGs hit a friendly unit, however, they will damage it just as readily as an enemy unit. [KC, 11-Sep-99]
- How do the powers of Phoenix Guardians work if the Guardian is associated with the unit, instead of leading it? That is simple! They do not. Unless the ability of a personality says that if affects a unit the model is associated with, then it only affects a unit if the model is the leader. If they are associated, then they may only affect themselves with abilities unless their ability specifically allows them to do otherwise. [KC, 11-Sep-99]
- Why weren't the Black Scrolls included in the Shadowlands Box? You see, the Black Scrolls, when opened, created earth shattering events that affected all of Rokugan. It became a problem for us deciding how these global affects could be translated down to the tactical level of Clan War. The decision was made to simply say that effects of the Black Scrolls were too powerful to include in Clan War. Besides, story-wise, most of them were opened by Yogo Junzo in the privacy of his lair, not on a Clan War battle field. [MF, 30-Jul-99]
- Can I use the new Taisa in Legacy of the Forge in a tournament? The L5R RPG product Legacy of the Forge has an optional Clan War battle in it to resolve part of the story. In that section is a new LP called a Taisa. The Taisa in Legacy of the Forge is a special profile for that module only, and is not tournament legal. Taisa will be coming out in a later product that will be tournament legal. [KC, 30-July-99]
- The Special Orders rules state that a spell is cast in the Special Orders phase, but does it count as a Special Order? -- This is one that is going to shock a lot of people, but the answer is: No. Special Orders that appear on a shugenja's force card are not Special Orders, but rather are innate abilities that are used in the Special Orders phase. This is one section of the rules that is not very clear, but basically all spells that reference the Special Orders phase are in fact cast in the Special Orders phase, but do not count as Special Orders unless specifically noted as such. Remember three things:
- Unless otherwise noted, all special abilities on shugenja are Innate Abilities.
- Unless otherwise noted, all Innate Abilities are considered spells.
- Unless otherwise noted, spells are never considered Special Orders, although they may be required to be cast in the Special Orders Phase.
The section discussing Special Orders that talks about Spell Special Orders was actually put in place to handle spells that actually *are* special orders. However, it has since been decided that such spells would be very confusing, so will probably not ever be implemented. All spells that mention the Special Orders phase go off during the spell portion of the phase, and do not count as special orders. [13-Jun-99]
- Dragons cannot take Special Weapon Items, so that means that Togashi Hoshi cannot take Weapon Items either since he is a dragon, right? Actually, No. The other dragons are all Creatures, but Togashi Hoshi is not. Creatures are not allowed to take Special Weapon Items, so that is why the dragons cannot take Weapon Items. Hoshi has no such limitation. [4-Jun-99]
- Can I use Biting Steel to give my archers a bonus? No. Unless otherwise specified, any bonuses granted are for Close Combat only. This applies to spells, tattoos, etc. [KC, 16-Mar-99]
- Why don't the traits and abilities in the Custom Personalities section match the Skill Descriptions section? The section on Custom Personalities (CWR, p 78-79) was at one point removed from the rulebook, but was replaced at the last minute when it was found that there would be enough space for it. However, the skill descriptions may be wrong, so if there is a conflict with the Skill Descriptions (CWR, p 69-70), the Skill Descriptions are correct. Fearless is one example. [KC, 30-Nov-98]
- What if there is a conflict between a Force Card and the book in an expansion set? The book takes precedent. The most recently printed material takes precedent over older material if there is a conflict in wording on a rule. [MF, 11-Jan-98]
- What if a sidebar example and the rulebook do not agree? Many of the sidebar examples use faulty data or unit names (like the Ranged Attack example that says a Fire Dragon has 6 damage dice and +1 DAM for its Ranged Attack rather than 7 damage dice with +0 DAM). The Clan War Rule Book is THE authority on any questions you may have concerning the mechanics of the game. The text in the rules takes precedent over any sidebar examples. [KC, 30-Sep-98]
- If a unit began the turn at full strength and takes enough casualties to lose 25% of its force, how do I calculate the Morale Test TN? It must make a Morale test at -1 to the roll, since it has both taken 25% casualties this turn, and been reduced to 75% of its original strength. Note that if the unit is engaged in Close Combat, then the 25% casualties morale state will only apply if the unit took more damage that turn than it delivered. [KC, 30-Sep-98]
- What is with reprints of cards with a Kanji Character on them? Some upcoming Force cards are updated versions of existing cards. They can be distinguished from the originals by a Kanji character next to the unit/personalities name. The Kanji is the first character from NEW. These new versions officially supersede the older cards, and will be used exclusively in tournaments. [6-Nov-98]
Purchasing Troops
If I recruit troops from another army, who can lead them? When recruiting from other clans, you may recruit units, and personalities to lead those units, at the noted % cost increase. When you oath someone from another clan, that allows that person to lead units from your army's clan (i.e. you could oath a Crane personality and put it in command of one of your Crab units - not normally allowed). Since you may not place a Crab leader in charge of the recruited Crane unit, the only way that you can put a leader in the Crane unit is if you also recruit a Crane personality to lead it. [KC, 20-Jan-00]
- If I purchase a unit of models with the Skirmish trait, do I have to pay the extra 2 koku per model for them to skirmish? If you are recruiting them as a skirmish unit, then you must pay the extra +2 koku per model. The only exceptions are a Crab army recruiting a skirmishing Crab unit or a Unicorn army recruiting a skirmishing Unicorn unit. If you do not pay the extra 2 koku, you can only use the models in non-skirmish formations. The skirmish trait does not mean the unit automatically skirmishes, it just means that the unit *can* skirmish. Units without the skirmish trait may never skirmish. The only exceptions are shugenja (who always skirmish) and unaligned Light Infantry units (which are allowed to skirmish according to the Crab Army Expansion). [KC, 25-Oct-99]
- Cost Modifiers -- If I Oath Tsukuro into my Dragon army, and then give him a unit of Skeletal Troops, what is the final cost? 14 * 120% = 16.8 - 2 = 14.8 each = 15 points per model. The multiplication takes place before the addition/subtraction. I think we'll make a blanket statement in D.E. noting that, at all times during Clan War, multiplication takes place before addition/subtraction. [KC, 24-Aug-99]
- When a card says, "20 models total in 2 units", does that mean 20 models each in two units or a total of twenty models dispersed between two units? It means 20 models total, split up however you like (maximum of two units, though). You cannot field more than twenty of these models in your army.
- Do Leadership Packages count towards the maximum number of models of a unit? Yes. A Leadership Package is a sort of "upgrade" of one of the models in the unit so that model can lead the unit. It is still considered to be a model of that type for purposes of maximum number of models allowed. So if a unit has a maximum of 1 unit with 12 models, you may have 12 models or 11 models and a Leadership Package. [13-Jun-99]
Shugenja
- Can I give a shugenja weapons? If the shugenja is leading a combat unit, then you may give him weapons to match his unit, just as you can with a samurai. Use the samurai cost for the weapons (and the range as well, if it is a Ranged Attack weapon). [4-Jun-99]
- Unless otherwise noted, all special abilities on a shugenja that you must activate are Innate Abilities.
[13-Jun-99]
- Can I give a shugenja two copies of the same spell? Yes, but keep in mind that you may only cast a spell a number of times equal to the appropriate ring, regardless of how many copies of it you have. [7-Sep-99]
Tactical Cards
- If an attached card on a personality is used, does it count as being played? If a tactical card is is being used to generate the Tactical effect on the card (and not just for it's Focus value) then it is being "played", whether it is from the hand or from a personality to whom it is attached. [KC, 11-Sep-99]
- If I play Burst of Speed on a unit with no armor lead by a personality with light armor, what bonus do I get? Since it target's the unit, I would say to look at the troop card to determine the armor type for the unit. If the unit has no troops, look at the leader of the unit (usually an individual). [KC, 11-Sep-99]
- Can my vile Shadowlands opponent play Martyr when I kill one of his personalities? Unfortunately, the answer is Yes. There is no exclusion given for Shadowlands models, or any other honorless dog. Martyr will work [KC, 22-May-99]
Flanking
- According to the rules, you cannot get Rank or Overlap bonus if you are "within terrain". Does that include roads or linear obstacles? No. The rules should actually have said "within difficult terrain". You can still get Rank bonus while on a road or behind a linear obstacle. [4-Jun-99]
- Penalties to a unit who is Flanked (either in the flank or in the rear) say that they apply to all rolls, does that include duels? Yes. The penalties apply to all rolls, so those include damage rolls in duels. [4-Jun-99]
- If a Yari equipped unit is attacked in the Flank or Rear, can they use their Yari to strike before the enemy unit does? Do they turn to face the attack with their spears? No. This is covered in CWR, p. 54, Flank and Rear Attacks: "...the flanked unit cannot use any special attacks, reactions, or special rules that provide Close Combat benefits during the first turn of the engagement." Since Yari bonus only applies to the first turn, the flanked unit does not get their bonus. [4-Jun-99]
- Can the yari bonus affect Rank or Overlap bonus? If a unit (A) is already engaged with unit (B), and a unit of yari (C) engages unit A in the front and manages to do enough damage to kill a model that would have been in the second rank of that unit, does the unit lose a Rank bonus die since that model in the second rank cannot "strike back"? -- As long as there is still a whole rank when it comes time for unit A to roll its dice, then it still gets the Rank bonus die, as that bonus is not dependent on a particular model or set of models getting swings, but is rather a bonus die for having a large, organized unit in the combat. [KC, 11-Jun-99]
Questions about figures
This section is for questions about figures (what is in a blister, what if a figure has the "wrong" weapon, etc.).
Oni no Mizu -- The arm that you cannot find a place for (the one with the thick "pin" on it) actually gets glued into the base -- the "pin" is actually a tab that fits into the slot in the base. The small wave should be glued onto the front of Mizu like a leading wave, with the curve mimicking the curve on the body. [24-Dec-99]
- Hiruma Kage -- Is supposed to have 5 wounds with an Earth of 5. He has been having a tough time of it lately. [KC, 25-May-99]
- Matsu Tsuko -- Although the figure is armed with a naginata, she is actually armed with a katana. The figure looked so good that we let it slide. If she is leading a group of Lion Heavy Elite, then by all means buy the naginata for her, otherwise just leave her as a cool looking fig whose force card uses a katana. As for assembling the fig: Tsuko's daisho goes on the left side with the belt showing on the outside -- look for the missing spot on her belt on that side and the belt on the daisho will fill the gap. As I recall, the katana points down and the wakizashi points up. [KC, 16-Jan-99]
- Hida Kisada -- Anyone who bought the fig can send a Self-Addressed, Stamped Envelope to AEG, and the will send you a card for the figure. The card is also coming out in the Crab Clan Army Expansion, but unfortunately, the miniature shipped before the cards were printed. [KC, 19-Dec-98]
Product Information
This section is for miscellaneous Product questions or other information (sculpting credit, limited runs, etc.).
- Beast Boxes
- It turns out that all beast boxes will be a limited run (between 3000 and 5000 of each one). Once they are gone, they will be out of print for a while. They may be brought back later if demand warrants, but in a somewhat more expensive package. [KC, 17-Jan-99]
- Although Kyoso no Oni has two identical figures in the box, Oni no Tsuburu will have two different Oni in the box. Kyoso no Oni was so easily modifiable that a second figure did not seem necessary. It is a very difficult figure to cast.[so expect production will be somewhat slow -BK]. [KC, 17-Jan-98]
- The Expansion Boxes and Blister Packs are also worth Koku!
- Save the UPC code from the Army Expansion boxes, and the Colored AEG symbol off of the blister packs. The card inserts from the Reinforcement Packs should also be saved. They are all worth koku. Koku are a kind of trading stamp where AEG will offer special CW merchandise that you can get with koku. Just what is going to be available has not been decided yet. It also looks as if koku from the Legend of the Five Rings collectible card game will also be redeemable for CW merchandise.
- The value of the various CW stuff is as follows:
Koku Item(s) 3 Blister Packs 8 Reinforcement Packs, Beast Boxes 12 Expansions (Infantry, Cavalry, Crab, etc) - As soon as any koku deals are announced, I will tell you about them, hopefully we should hear something soon. [17-Mar-99]
- Daimyo Edition
- Once all of the Clan box sets have been released, we will produce a hard bound Daimyo Edition of Clan War that includes the Clan War Rule Book, The Clans Book & all of the new rules presented in the Clan Box sets, plus all of the rules clarifications & errata since the game was released. [MF, 8-Dec-98]
- AEG understands your concern over a perception that you'll have to buy each clan expansion in order to get all of the rules, and have taken the steps to remedy this. Next summer, once all of the clan expansions have been released, they will be publishing a hard bound edition of the Clan War rules (the Daimyo Edition) that will include all of the new & expanded rules, plus errata, rule clarifications, etc. Thus, instead of asking you to purchase all of our clan expansions (although if you did, they'd appreciate it nonetheless), AEG asks your patience until they release the comprehensive rule book. [MF, 20-Oct-98]
- The game desperately needs an index and it will get one, but not before the Daimyo edition. [KC, 15-Oct-98]
- Credits on Dragons -- I have to apologize to the artists and sculptors that I didn't catch the lack of credit on the Beast Boxes. The art was done by our own in-house artist, Chris Dornaus, while the sculpting was done by a couple of the greats -- Dave Summers (both the Earth and Fire Dragons) and Bob Ridolfi (Kyoso no Oni). Future boxes will credit the appropriate artists. (KC, 22-Jan-99)
Replacement Parts
- There is, in fact, no ruler included in the boxed set. A press release was sent to the distributors to be passed on to the retailers stating as such. Although the rule is listed on the bottom of the box as being included, you in fact were not short-changed because you did not get one. [MF, 18-Sep-98]
- The Void Dragon Force card is not missing from your set. The card will be available in the Void Dragon Beast Box, which is not scheduled for release until some time in '99. [MF, 23-Sep-98]
