Mirumoto Battle School

– By Mirumoto DomiLama

The Dragon Clan is indeed the most mysterious clan of Rokugan. Their tattooed men and powerful shugenja, backed by the sheer force of the Mirumoto samurai make them a formidable fighting force, and they are absolutely one of the most flexible clans due to their tattoos, surprising the enemy by breathing fire, gaining a huge damage bonus, or pumping their ATN up.

I, the fearless General Domilama, will hone your strategy and prowess on the battlefield, with a quick look at the best Dragon personalities, troops, items, and some other vital strategies worthy only of the powerful and mysterious Dragon Clan

Personalities

  • Togashi Yokuni – The original kami that has led the clan for the past thousand years is truly all a god should be. He is a shugenja that cannot be spent, thus making for a powerful Fires That Cleanse carrier, rolling fifteen dice right before his unit engages the enemy. His ability to let his unit attach two tattoos is a nice one, great for giving Dragon Talons some speed or damage bonuses with the Tiger and Centipede tattoos. And he can turn into the Earth Dragon, flanking an enemy by surprise at a crucial moment. Just watch out, when he does turn into a dragon, his unit’s tattoo effects end. He is also a superior duelist, with a Void 6, Iajutsu 4 and Double Chi.
  • Mirumoto Hitomi (exp.) – The other Champion of the Dragon can be a very useful general, and is one of my very favorite forces in Clan War. Her new experienced 2 version [from Call to Arms - Editor] is even better, giving her unit the ability to attach two extra tattoos. Also, she can cancel a duel targeting her if generated by a personality of lesser glory. She is a prime choice for attaching the Obsidian Hand, which make her an even better duelist than the Crane’s Kakita Toshimoko, even with the Emerald Armor. Simply cancel his duel, and play Test of Might. Her Water 6 kills his 4, plus more if she has the Obsidian Hand.
  • Togashi Hoshi – This guy definitely lives up to his reputation of being the son of a god, with 8 inches of movement a turn, Charge and Countercharge, flight, and a powerful combo of ATT and DAM Bonuses. Give him Togashi's Daisho, with a Tiger Tattoo, and charge him into the enemy. He now has +4 ATT, +7 DAM, four strikes, and roles two damage for each hit! His speed gives him the power to be a great flanking unit, and Fear 1 and a flank test can break the enemy before killing them off.
  • Togashi Mitsu – My favorite leader for the tattooed troops has a built in Dragon Tattoo, rolling five or six damage automatically, and depending on the experience, either Dragonfly or Crab tattoos. And for you Toturi players, he will become your best foreign friend. His only flaw is that he is vulnerable to duels.
  • Togashi Bujun – My second favorite Ise Zumi has some unique tattoos to begin with, the ability to gain two extra attack dice, and Fast Strike for two turns. His defence of 4 and Stalwart Defender are also nice.
  • Units

  • Dragon Medium Elite – These troops are very useful in large numbers, due to their good moral and damage bonuses, and only 13 koku apiece. Watch out for ranged attacks though, try putting a more defensive unit in front of them to absorb the hits. Their close combat ATN makes them stronger in engagements to make up for their vulnerability to arrows.
  • Dragon Talons – I absolutely love these guys, especially for their ability to gain +2 ATT and +2 DAM when attacking. A modestly economical unit of 23 a piece for two wounds, good moral and training, and nice ATN make this an awesome unit.
  • Ise Zumi – The uniqueness of the Dragon shines through in these tattooed men. I like to give them Crab, Centipede, and Tiger tattoos, but you can make yours different. And if their leader has Togashi’s Daisho, this unit is powered up even more.
  • Tattooed Madmen – These don’t seem like much at first appearance, but check this out. Give them a Crab tattoo, and three Tiger, and give them a leader with charge. These guys are now a TN 8, +2 ATT and +10 DAM for two turns, plenty enough to kill almost anyone in two turns. Watch out though, their moral gets weaker for each tattoo, and can become very expensive after awhile.
  • Items

  • Togashi’s Daisho – An extra tattoo, +1 ATT and +1 DAM, and resistance 2, for only sixty koku, how can you go wrong? You can’t! Plus, the tattoo can be given to a non-tattooed unit, making those Talons or Medium Elite very nice.
  • Centipede Tattoo – Makes those Ise Zumi fly like a bat out of Jingoku! 6” cavalry movement makes ise zumi faster than even the Unicorn steeds! And the tactical card Burst of Speed is a perfect combo for these tattooed men, giving them 8” movement.
  • Crab Tattoo – This is yet another great tattoo for the Dragon. ATN of 8 make them insanely defensive for a couple of turns.
  • Dragon Tattoo – a nine-inch ranged attack with no attack roll required? Unbelievable. [Ed. Note: Remember, you can only use one of these per unit per turn, regardless of how many you have attached to a unit of Tattooed Madmen]
  • Dragonfly Tattoo – Protection from ranged attacks is always nice, making them suffer –1 ATT, -2 DAM for two turns. This is a nice thing to put on a group of Tattooed Warriors, having them absorb the hits for an advancing army.
  • Falcon Tattoo – This gives the unit +2 to moral tests, which I seriously don’t think helps much. I ignore this as much as possible.
  • Lion Tattoo – The Charge skill that this provides is nice, but I’d rather save tattoo space and leave charging to the Tactical card or the unit leader.
  • Phoenix Tattoo – Immunity to spells, innate abilities, and elemental effects for two turns. This could be useful if you know that you will be facing Phoenix in battle, or the maho of the Shadowlands, but otherwise could be a waste of tattoo space.
  • Tiger Tattoo – This gives you +3 DAM, which can help you kill the other guy immensely. If the leader has Charge, and with the natural +1 of tattooed units, you can get a whopping +5 Damage!
  • General Strategies of the Dragon

First of all, Dragon are very well rounded out, and are not first in any special area, but are definitely second in everything. The Dragon strength lies in it’s tattoos, giving them a special surprise in the middle of a game, which will win it for a player who uses these abilities at the right times.

Dragon will never beat a Lion or Crab in pure force, nor can they defeat Crane in Dueling, or shoot the crap out of Phoenix or Mantis. But instead of trying to outdo the enemy at its strengths, strike its weaknesses. Duel Mantis and Crab; use brute force with Phoenix and Crane; shoot up Lion with arrows and magic.

I like to get the best of my tattoos, by giving Togashi’s Daisho to a very powerful leader, like Hitomi, and give her a bunch of Talons with a Centipede tattoo, and rush at the enemy. When you get there, charge and use the Talon’s ability, and let Hitomi duel the leader.

My very favorite army of all time was all tattooed. Two units of Ise Zumi, one of Madmen, and one with Dragon Talons and the Togashi swords. All of my units had a Centipede tattoo, and rushed at the Crane I fought before they knew what to do. Hitomi then dueled their general with a Test of Might, and the battle was won. This tactic makes archery nearly useless.

I love the Dragon Clan. When used properly, they will decimate any of the other clans, with their surprise tattoos. Remember to stick some Kami’s blood in your Tactical deck, and you’re all set to win. For we are the heart of the riddle, and you cannot defeat what you do not understand.

    Domo Arigato to all.
